Patti Knezevic of Prince George whipped Sarah Wark of Victoria 8-3 in the 1 vs. 2 game at the Scotties BC Women’s Curling Championship in Maple Ridge. Knezevic advances to the Provincial final today (Sunday) at 1pm
against Wark, who eliminated Kelly Scott of Kelowna 7-6 in today’s semi-final. The BC champion qualifies for the National Scotties Tournament of Hearts Feb 14-22 in Moose Jaw.

UPDATE—Knezevic won the Provincial Scotties this afternoon following a 5-3 victory over Wark in an extra end.

–Despite outshooting the Lethbridge Hurricanes 56-32, including 28-7 in the third period, the Prince George Cougars losing skid has reached nine games. The Hurricanes scored four of the last five goals over the final 30 minutes to beat the Cougars 7-4. Jansen Harkins tallied twice for the Cats who remain tied in points with Vancouver and Kamloops for 3rd place in the BC Division and the final playoff spot. The Cougars play tonight in Cranbrook against the Kootenay Ice to conclude a stretch of five games in six days.

–The PG Spruce Kings, coming off Friday’s 4-3 victory over Surrey, play Thursday in Langley, Friday in Chilliwack and Saturday in Surrey before hosting Coquitlam Feb 6th and 7th.

–The 5th place Valley West Hawks knocked off the Major Midget leading Cariboo Cougars 3-2 in the first of a doubleheader in Richmond. The Cougars came back today with a 2-1 triumph to earn a split of the doubleheader.

–The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team swept the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary to move into the third and final playoff spot in the Canada West Explorer Division. UNBC is 7-7 after outscoring Mount Royal 76-64 (Saturday) and 92-85 (Friday). In women’s play, The Lady Timberwolves are 2-12 after a split against the Cougars. UNBC won 63-56 (Saturday) after Mount Royal took the opener 69-46 (Friday). The Timberwolves host MacEwan Friday and Saturday.

–Megan Heinicke of Prince George finished 29th in the World Cup Biathlon women’s 10-kilometre pursuit in
Antholz, Italy. Earlier in the week, the 26-year-old Heinicke was 40th out of 95 in the 7.5-K sprint.

–Two members of the Prince George Judo Club, that were part of Team BC, reached the medal podium at the Saskatchewan Open Judo Tournament in Regina. Branden Edwards earned Gold in the U16 boys -60 kg and Bronze in U18. Kristen Yawney captured Silver in U21 girls -70 kg.
