Strike deadline nears for rail workers

The union representing almost six thousand rail workers across Canada says they are ready to go on strike if they have to.

Unifor represents mechanical and safety staff at CP and CN Rail as well as intermodal staff, excavators and clerks within CN.

Unifor members with CP Rail have already passed a strike vote by 97% and set a February 15th deadline. CN Rail members have not yet done the same, but CN will have the ability to lock workers out on 15th.

However the union has said that progress being made at the bargaining table with CN means that would be a surprising move to them.

“It would be irresponsible for us to not plan for the worst and expect the best.” Brian Stevens Unifor National Rail Director says “Our aim is to try to get to a collective agreement that can be ratified by members but if that’s not possible we are definitely preparing ourselves for the 15th.”

The union is unhappy with a number of concessions both employers have tabled in separate negotiations. CP Rail is looking for claw backs on some pensions, benefits and hours of work. CN Rail is asking for hours of work, rest periods, safety provisions to be revised.

“CP Rail is certainly a lot more aggressive on their concessionary demands, but that doesn’t minimize the concessions that CN Rail has on the table” says Stevens

Unifor represents 4,300 staff members with CN Rail and 1,650 with CP.

CN Rail could not be reached for comment.
