Forward Brett Connolly of Prince George has been traded from the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Boston Bruins in return for a pair of second round draft picks. Connolly, a former PG Cougar who was drafted 6th overall by the Lightning in 2010, has 12 goals, 3 assists, 38 penalty minutes and a plus 4 rating in 50 games this season with Tampa. The Lightning also acquired defenceman Braydon Coburn from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for first-and third-round draft picks plus defenceman Radko Gudas.

UPDATE–Ex PG Cougars defenceman Eric Brewer was dealt from
the Anaheim Ducks along with a 5th round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs for defenceman Korbinian Holzer. The
35-year-old Brewer is a PG Cougars minority owner.

–Thanks to a three game win streak, the Prince George Cougars are back in a playoff spot, sitting 3rd in the BC Division. The Cougars followed a 5-4 overtime victory in Seattle (Friday) with a convincing 5-1 triumph in Everett (Saturday). Jansen Harkins notched seven points (an overtime goal and six assists) in the two games while linemate Zach Pochiro had six points (three goals and three assists) in the two wins. Chase Witala tallied twice in Everett. In the past eight games, Harkins, Pochiro and Witala have combined for 44 points.

–The PG Cougars, with nine games left, are a point ahead of the Vancouver Giants and two in front of the last place Kamloops Blazers. Prince George is also just a point behind Tri-City in the Western Conference. The Cougars host the Central Division leading (39-19-1-4) Calgary Hitmen Wednesday and the Victoria Royals Friday and Saturday. Calgary plays in Kamloops Tuesday while at the same time Vancouver faces off in Spokane.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings will start the playoffs on the road after they blew a 3-1 lead in the second period and lost their final game of the regular season, 6-3 to the Langley Rivermen. The Rivermen tallied three unanswered third period goals (Saturday) before 1,263 fans at the PG Coliseum.

–The third place Spruce Kings visit the second place Rivermen on Tuesday and Wednesday in games one and two of their best of seven BCHL Mainland Division first round series. The series shifts back to the PG Coliseum Friday and Saturday. (The Spruce Kings finished with 27-24-1-6 record, three points behind the Rivermen)

–The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars wrapped up their regular season with a 4-2 loss (Saturday) and a 4-4 tie (Sunday) against the Okanagan Rockets. The (29-8-3) Cougars finished in first place in the BCMML while the
(23-12-5) Rockets ended up 4th.

–The regular season champion Cariboo Cougars will host the 8th place Fraser Valley Thunderbirds in a best of 3 BCMML quarter-final series. Games at Kin 1 will go Friday at 5pm, Saturday at 1pm and Sunday, if necessary, at 10am.

–Other first round major midget playoff match-ups: #7 South Island Royals at #2 Vancouver NW Giants, #6 Valley West Hawks at #3 Vancouver NE Chiefs and #5 Greater Vancouver Canadians at #4 Okanagan Rockets.

–The UNBC Timberwolves men’s basketball team was eliminated in the Canada West quarter-finals following a pair of losses to the UBC Thunderbirds. UBC on home court beat UNBC 88-78 (Friday) and 83-77 (Thursday) to sweep the series. It was the last action in a Timberwolves uniform for Jeff Chu, Franco Kouagnia, and Devin McMurtry.

–Both the College Heights Cougars and the Duchess Park Condors ended up with a win and four losses at the 32-team BC Junior Boys Basketball Championship in Langley.

–Biathlete Matthew Neumann of Prince George was the third top Canadian out of six and 34th overall at the IBU 10-kilometre sprint Sunday in Canmore. In the Saturday sprint, Neumann was 43rd. The IBU Cup, which is a feeder series to the World Cup, continues on Wednesday.

–Four Prince George gymnasts competed at the Carol Lenz Memorial Invitational in Surrey. In the all around division results, Rhiana Palfy placed 2nd, McKenna Parker 3rd, Reid Powers 4th and Jade Jacobs 10th.
