8 PG athletes help BC finish 3rd with 88 medals

Eight athletes, either from Prince George, or currently living in the city, earned at least one medal at the Canada Winter Games. On the final weekend, snowboarders Meryeta O’Dine and Evan Bichon earned individual gold in the snowboard cross. Earlier, Emily Dickson captured four medals in biathlon. Dickson finished with an individual gold, silver and bronze plus a team relay gold. Carolina Hiller took three silver in long track speed skating, Claire Lapointe captured gold in biathlon relay (same team as Dickson), Lavanna Laass earned silver in judo, Justin Hempole took bronze in figure skating and Tony Proctor got bronze in mixed team archery (along with Emerie Watson of Quesnel). That’s three individual gold, one team gold, five individual silver, two individual bronze and one team bronze for the host city as 40 per cent of PG athletes reached the podium.

–Team BC finished third in Canada Winter Games medals with 88 (22 Gold, 33 Silver and 33 Bronze). Quebec came out on top with 141 (62G, 39S, 40B) followed by Ontario with 112 (47G, 40S, 25B). Alberta was 4th behind BC with 75 (14G, 25S, 36B).

–BC finished its final day of Winter Games competition (Saturday) by earning a dozen medals, two gold, six silver, and four bronze.

–In the last sporting event of the Winter Games, Ontario earned gold in men’s hockey outscoring Alberta 3-1 in
the final. Manitoba captured bronze with Quebec 4th, Nova Scotia 5th and BC 6th. The BC men’s hockey team included a pair of Cariboo Cougars: sniper Justin Almeida and back-up goalie Dorrin Luding.

–BC finished 4th in women’s team judo losing the bronze medal match to Ontario. The BC team included Lavanna Laass, Kristen Yawney and Grace Northrop of Prince George. Quebec whipped Alberta for gold. Meanwhile, BC captured bronze in men’s team judo defeating Manitoba. Gold went to Ontario with Quebec the silver.

–The table tennis competition came to a close with Team BC earning five medals (four silver and a bronze).

–In squash, the BC women’s team took silver.

–Ontario got gold in women’s curling, edging Nova Scotia in the final 6-5 in an extra end. Saskatchewan captured bronze thanks to a 9-8 victory over New Brunswick. BC’s Sarah Daniels of North Delta finished 5th.

–The BC cross country relay teams skied their way to women’s silver and men’s bronze. The cross country team wrapped up the week with a gold, silver, and two bronze in the able body categories and four gold, four silver and one bronze in the para events.
