Civil forfeiture grant to help put on forum for violence against women

Carrier Sekani Family Services has some extra dollars to address violence against young women and girls in Burns Lake.

The organization has received $30,000 from the provincial government in the form of a civil forfeiture grant.

Director Mary Teegee says they plan on using the cash to host a forum in the community.

“With the Mayor of Burns Lake, with government dignitaries and chiefs of the area, and service providers and some key people in the community” says Teegee, “and what the intent of the forum is to bring to light first of all the issue of violence against women, specifically Aboriginal women.”

Teegee says they will then create an action plan that will be endorsed by those representatives from Burns Lake.

She says they are aiming to hold this forum in the fall.
