Prince George Inner City fighter Kenny Lally earned bronze in the 56-kilogram division at the Cheo Aponte Cup tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Lally finished with a 2-1 record with his three round loss coming in the semi-finals by unanimous decision to what he described as “a bigger and better boxer” from the Dominican Republic.

The 25-year-old Lally, a six-time national champion, was one of 10 Canadian boxers in the competition. His two wins by unanimous decisions came against opponents from the Bahamas and Puerto Rico.

–The USA crushed Canada 7-2 in the semis at the World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Switzerland. Jansen Harkins of the PG Cougars did not pick up a point in the game for the Canadian team that will play Switzerland for a bronze medal. Harkins has 2 goals and 2 assists in six tournament games.

–Home teams opened the WHL Conference finals with a win. The Kelowna Rockets edged the Portland Winterhawks 3-2 in the West while the Brandon Wheat Kings dumped the Calgary Hitmen 9-4 in the East.

UPDATE—Saturday in the WHL: Portland edged Kelowna 3-2 to tie the series 1-1 and Brandon nipped Calgary 3-2 in overtime to take a 2-0 lead.

–The Portland Winterhawks have signed 16-year-old defenceman Conor MacEachern, who played this season with the Cariboo Cougars.

The 6’3”, 175 pound MacEachern had four goals and 13 assists in 33 games with the Cougars.
