Jansen Harkins of the Prince George Cougars helped Canada to a bronze medal at the World Under-18 Hockey Championship in Switzerland.
Harkins scored a goal in Canada’s 5-2 victory over the Swiss in the third place game. He finished the tournament with three goals and two assists in seven games, tied for 2nd best among WHL players on the Canadian team.
The USA captured gold edging Finland 2-1 in overtime in the final. The Americans whipped Canada 7-2 in the semi-finals.
–The WHL Western Conference final between the Kelowna Rockets and the Portland Winterhawks is tied 1-1. Each team has a 3-2 victory. Games 3 & 4 in the best of 7 series will be played Tuesday & Wednesday in Portland.
–The Brandon Wheat Kings enjoy a 2-0 lead in the WHL Eastern final with the series shifting to Calgary Tuesday and Wednesday. The Wheat Kings beat the Hitmen on home ice 9-4 and 3-2 in overtime.
–Prince George Inner City fighter Kenny Lally tuned up for the 2015 Pan AmGames in Toronto (July 10-26) by capturing a bronze medal in his 56-kilogram weight class at the Cheo Aponte Cup boxing tournament in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The 25-year-old Lally ended up with a 2-1 record, all by three round unanimous decisions. He beat opponents from the Bahamas and Puerto Rico before losing in the semis to a boxer from the Dominican Republic.
Lally is a six-time national champion who was one of 10 fighters on the Canadian team in the international tournament.
–Former PG Track Club member Alyx Treasure, who is competing for Kansas State, finished first in the women’s high jump at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational meet in Berkeley, California.
The 22-year-old Treasure took top spot with a leap of 1.84 metres.
–The second week in Prince George Senior Lacrosse begins this evening (Monday) at 8 at the Coliseum. The Northland/Nissan Assault battle the Cowboy Ranch Stylers. Both teams are 0-1.
