Little Bobtail 65% contained; 5 new fires spark in PG Fire Centre

Although progress continues to be made on the Little Bobtail Lake Fire, the BC Wildfire Branch is reporting that they are responding to 5 new fires within the Prince George fire centre.

They include a 250 hectare blaze near Prophet River east of the Alaska Highway, a 6 hectare fire southwest of Miworth and a one a half hectare fire south of Mackenzie.

The BC Wildfire Branch says that no structures are immediately threatened and they are responding to the fires with ground crews and air support.

In a release, the branch says these new starts serve as a reminder for just how careful people have to be out in the backcountry as the wildfire risk is rated from high-extreme across much of the PG Fire Centre.

An open burning ban is in effect, punishable with tickets of $345, or the firefighting bill if you start a wildfire.

As for the Little Bobtail Lake Fire, crews had another productive day and have been able to raise the containment level to 65%.

Crews built guard on the eastern flank of the fire today with controlled burn-off’s and have moved into mop-up operations on a small 50 foot portion of the fires perimeter; digging up hot spots and soaking down the ground.

But the Wildfire Branch says the fire remains volatile along many fronts, moving vigorously across the ground and “candling” trees along the perimeter.

More than 330 fire personal remain on scene, and evacuation alerts and orders remain in effect.
