Bike racks come to downtown Prince George

It’s halfway through Bike to Work Week and this morning the PG Rotary Club, Downtown PG and City of Prince George pulled the curtain back on the first of 60 bike racks to be installed downtown.

PG Rotory Club Director Ross Birchall says bike racks do more than encourage healthy living.

“It’s shown that a bike rack in front of a business increases revenues…when bikes are attached to a bike rack, someone’s downtown working or supporting a local business.”

He added that designing a bike rack isn’t as easy as one would think.

“It was tough, we had the prototype to deal with, which couldn’t infringe on any design patents. We looked at a few that were done internationally; in Europe they have the ‘cycle hoop’. Here we’ve circumvented that by turning into an oval, very simple.”

The oval is attached to existing light posts downtown, converting them to simple bike racks. The PG Rotary Club covered the $22,000 bill for design and manufacturing while the City is covering installation, which will take place over the next few months.

The racks were all manufactured in Prince George, something Birchall says works well with Rotary’s mandate of growing local economies.
