Hartley Miller’s Hart Attack – June 26, 2015 Edition 529

His dreams have temporarily been shattered. His pride has been bruised and his ego has taken a hit but fullback Brandon Deschamps of Prince George can hold his head high following an unsuccessful tryout with the B.C. Lions.

It’s never easy to get the pink slip especially when on the cusp of landing a spot with a team you grew up idolizing.

The 22-year-old Deschamps, a Kelly Road grad, was signed by the Lions as an undrafted free agent just prior to training camp.

He was with the team seeing spot duty on special teams in the pre-season. Deschamps knew he was on the bubble to land one of 46 spots but remained hopeful. Then reality set in.

On the CFL roster deadline day, Deschamps was informed in a brief conversation with the Lions coaches to hand in his playbook because he was one of the final 12 cuts.

“It’s a lot of disappointment. I’ve spent a lot of time, a lot of effort trying to play professional football. To find out that opportunity isn’t there for you right now is definitely difficult,” said an emotional Deschamps.

“I am just going to take a little bit of time here, and get away from football and get away from pretty much everything. It’s all still pretty fresh in my mind and I have got a lot of things going on in my head and in my heart.”

The 6-foot-200 pound Deschamps left the Lions den with class having no bitterness towards anyone in the organization.

“It was an experience I will always remember and cherish. The coaches were good and the players there were great, so I wish them nothing but the best in the upcoming season.”

Deschamps, who has not received an offer from any other CFL team, has an option of returning to UBC for another year with the CIS Thunderbirds, but his goal remains the same.

“It’s still my dream to play professional football. If I were to have an opportunity I would try it again.”

The Lions begin their regular season Saturday, July 4th in Ottawa.

It may be a difficult game for Deschamps to watch on television, but with his positive attitude, strong work ethic and immense desire, don’t be surprised if one day down the road this highly motivated P.G. player gets that much sought after opportunity to wear a CFL uniform.

Anything to reduce the dreaded shootout is worth a try. The NHL needed a change and I’m sure fans will embrace a five minute 3 on 3 overtime session which is more appealing than 4 on 4.

Play should be more creative and free flowing with more chances at both ends of the ice.

Best of all fewer games to decide a winner will require a skills competition known as a shootout.

Last season just 45 per cent of NHL games that extended beyond regulation were decided in overtime.

This compares to a whopping 75 per cent in the AHL which had 3 on 3 OT in the 2014-15 season. In other words, only 25 per cent of the AHL games that went beyond regulation needed a shootout to determine a winner.

I may still be in a minority but I’ve never embraced the shootout. The gimmick has worn out its welcome.

3 on 3 overtime won’t eliminate it but odds strongly suggest it will reduce it. This may not be an ideal solution, however it is a compromise for the better.
