Rundown building to be demolished

An unoccupied building at the corner of 2nd and George street will be demolished by the end of summer.

The property owners have until August 3rd to destroy the structure, or the city will do it.

Manager of Bylaw Services Fred Crittenden presented photos of the facility to show city council just how dangerous the building is.

“Beams on the second floor are broken right through and sitting on top of other beams, it’s just a matter of time before everything collapses,” says Crittenden, “At some point because of snow or deterioration, the structure will go down…hopefully not on the sidewalk as somebody passes by.”

The building has been empty for years, and council has tried to take this step several times.

“Since 2011 the ownership group has made commitments to demolish the property,” remembers Councillor Garth Frizzell, “There were financial reasons, and you have to be sympathetic…to a point. But we’ve reached that point and now is the time for action to be taken.”

If the city is forced to take over demolition of the property, the ownership group will be billed through property taxes.
