OTTAWA CONTINUES TO INVEST IN RURAL INTERNET ACCESS

The Federal Government continues to make strides on it’s 305 million dollar investment to give rural Canadians better internet access.

Prince George-Peace River M-P, Bob Zimmer says the service is becoming more vital for those living in smaller communities.

“Now we are in the area of need where people rely on the internet for a lot of different things in rural Canada, so we want to make sure Canada get’s up to speed and provide that service Canadians want.”

Zimmer says while they plan to get the service to 98 percent of Canadian homes, a small percentage of people will still need it.

“Even the two percent, the 98 sounds like a big number but that two percent I empathize for because a lot of those people are taxpayers just like urban taxpayers and they want access to high speed.”

More internet announcements are coming to BC in the future.

Telus is in the process of giving residents in the Pineview area internet access.

In 2014, Ottawa launched the “Connecting Canadians” project which would give 98 percent of Canadian homes broadband internet access of five megabytes per second by 2017.
