Liberal National Defence Critic visits Prince George, pledges to re-open Veteran Affairs Office

The Liberal Party of Canada’s National Defence Critic visited Prince George over the past two days.

MP Joyce Murray says that a Liberal elected government will re-open the Prince George veterans office and restore Conservative cuts.

“The reality is, that by clawing back over 1 billion dollars out of the Veterans Affairs budget, there are a lot of other programs and services that were cut that may not have been so visible.”

During her time in PG, Murray paid a visit to the Prince George Legion. She says Legions across the country are doing a fantastic job catching people who fall through the cracks at Veterans Affairs.

“Especially in the last years when we’ve had so many veterans coming back from Afghanistan with mental and physical injuries, programs in Veterans Affairs have not been able to service them.”

Murray says she also met with Initiatives Prince George, Tourism PG, YXS, the PG Chamber of Commerce and took a tour of the Wood Innovation and Design Centre.

She also spoke at a Liberal fundraising dinner Monday evening and fired a salvo of shots at the Conservative government and their MP’s.

“It’s well known that MP’s for the Conservative Party are expected to be the mouthpiece for the Prime Minister. As opposed to the representative that is furthering the interests of their community in Ottawa.”

Murray says she is optimistic the Cariboo – Prince George riding could turn red for the first time ever. Two potential candidates have put their names forward; Tracy Calogheros and Matt Shaw.

Murray says there is still “opportunity” for someone in the Prince George – Peace River riding, as no one has announced candidacy.
