Fifth grade students in BC to learn about residential school system

Grade 5 students across BC will be learning about Canada’s residential school system for the first time.

Jo-Anne Chrona of the First Nation’s Education Steering Committee explains how the material will be taught.

“Materials for the elementary classrooms will be approached through story, kids will start learning a little bit about the polices on residential schools which we consider quite important as it is part of our collective Canadian history.”

Chrona adds they want students to have a better understanding of residential schools by the time they graduate.

“By the time students leave our K-12 system we would hope they would have a much deeper understanding about shared history of first nation’s people in Canada.”

The curriculum will be eased in for issues like sexual abuse.

It was one of many recommendation in the Truth and Reconciliation report which was released in June.
