Police hunting fentanyl in Prince George

Officials are still trying to determine if fentanyl was behind a spike of overdoses in Prince George late last week.

Fentanyl is a highly potent prescription opiate that is used for pain management in terminally ill patients. It has been the culprit is a wave of overdoses and deaths across BC and Alberta this summer.

Corporal Craig Douglass says it’s been difficult to track down similar drugs on the street.

“The drugs on the street generally get consumed shortly after purchase. Having said that, we are actively out trying to acquire the drugs as much as we can to determine whether or not fentanyl is in the community.”

“At this point we have not located fentanyl, but given the circumstances over the weekend it’s more than likely something along the lines of fentanyl is in the community.”

5 people were rushed to hospital in the course of 24 hours due to opiate overdoses last week, a number high above normal.

Northern Health says the 5 cases were unrelated, although all 5 were opiate drug users.
