Bike-A-Thon contributes more than $22,000 to Spirit of The North

The Punjabi Canadian Senior Society presented a cheque for more than $22,000 to the Spirit of The North Healthcare Foundation today.

The donation is in support of the 2015 11th Annual Radiothon, which raised money with the goal of buying a new Optos OCT SLO System with a California UWF Unit.

Event lead Gurdeep Gordie Powar and 15 riders from the Society Bike-A-Thon presented the $22,242 cheque in celebration of their 6th annual ride.

Powar says he got was heavily involved in cycling, and even rode to Jasper from Prince George, but thought he could put that drive towards a worthy cause.

Over the years, he says the event is growing…

“It gets bigger and better every year, and I expect it to. it was a family event, and the Senior’s Society also provided a free lunch for us, so we were able to reach past our goal.”

The bike-a-thon has raised more than $60,000 since its inception, and Powar thinks he still has several years left in him!

“I will carry on as long as my health allows me. I want to bring more young participants to this event. It’s fitness and family, as well as fundraising for a good cause- because all the money stays in our area!”

Spirit of the North CEO Judy Neiser says the Foundation is grateful for the contribution.

“It’s not just about the money. Obviously for us it’s a great thing, but it’s also about wellness. They’re cycling to Purden, they’re having a big family gathering, it’s something the whole community is involved in. It’s just so nice that they choose to involve the healthcare community as well.”
