The Prince George Cougars went 2-2 on a four game road trip that ended with consecutive victories. The Cougars followed a 4-2 win in Lethbridge with a 5-2 triumph in Medicine Hat. Chase Witala scored the game winner against Lethbridge and added two more goals against Medicine Hat while Nick McBride blocked 61 of the 65 shots he faced over those two games. The 12-9-1 Cougars, who are a season best three games above .500, host Kamloops Friday and Saturday and Portland on December 1st and 2nd.

–The Prince George Spruce Kings went 1-1 in a pair of weekend home games. Thanks to three power play goals, the Spruce Kings beat Salmon Arm 4-3 Saturday but Prince George lost 7-3 to the Powell River Kings on Sunday as Powell River scored five times in the final period. The 7-18-0-2 Spruce Kings visit Chilliwack Wednesday, Langley Thursday and Coquitlam Friday before hosting Coquitlam on December 3rd. Prince George trails Coquitlam by eight points for the final playoff spot in the Mainland Division and Coquitlam has two games in hand.

–The Northern Capitals won all three games in Victoria over the Vancouver Island Seals in the BC Hockey female midget AAA League. Scores were 2-1 Friday, 4-2 Saturday and 3-2 Sunday. The Caps improve their season record to 10-3-2 and are tied for second place with the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers, three points behind the Greater Vancouver Comets. The Northern Capitals return to league play with home games against the Kootenay Wild December 4th (6:45 p.m. Kin 1), 5th (4:30 p.m. Kin 1) and 6th (8:15 a.m. CN Centre).

–The UNBC Timberwolves split a pair of men’s games, but lost a women’s doubleheader against the Fraser Valley Cascades in Canada West basketball at the Northern Sport Centre. The UNBC men took the opener 81-74 and Fraser Valley came back with a 74-72 victory. The Lady Timberwolves dropped 80-68 and 78-67 decisions to the Cascades. The UNBC men are 2-4 and the women 0-6 with their final league games in 2015 on the road Friday and Saturday in Calgary against Mount Royal. Fraser Valley is 5-1 in the men’s division and 4-2 in the women’s standings. Next home games for the Timberwolves are slated for January 8th and 9th against MacEwan.

–Running back Brandon Deschamps of Prince George was named the Uteck Bowl MVP for the UBC Thunderbirds in a 36-9 win over the hometown St. Francis Xavier University X-Men. Deschamps, a Kelly Road grad, had 20 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown plus three receptions for 50 yards in the CIS football semi-final game. The 9-2 Thunderbirds advance to the Vanier Cup for the first time in 18 years and will tackle the defending national champion 9-2 Montreal Carabins Saturday in Quebec City.

–The high school football season is over for both the Senior Double A Varsity PGSS Polars and the Junior Double A Varsity Duchess Park Condors. In the high school Provincial quarter-finals, Carson Graham (North Vancouver) outscored the PGSS Seniors 34-20 in Kamloops and Mission whipped the Duchess Juniors 54-21 in Chilliwack.

–College Heights beat host DP Todd 3-0 in the final of the AA boys zone volleyball tournament. Both teams advance to the Provincials in Langley Dec 1-5. Meanwhile, the boys AAA zone volleyball title in Fort St John went to North Peace with a victory over PGSS in the final. Both teams qualify for the B.C. Championship early next month in Langley.

–Duchess Park captured the North Central zone triple-A girls volleyball title with a 3-1 victory over College Heights at CNC. Both teams advance to the Provincials.

–D.P. Todd took top honors at the double-A girls zone volleyball championship with a 3-0 win over Nechako Valley. D.P. will represent the North Central zone at the Provincials.

–The Prince George Judo Club, North Capital Judo Club and Hart Judo Academy combined for five gold medals, 10 silver and six bronze at the Steveston Judo tournament. Gold was earned by Kyra Edgson (U12), Sydney Edgson (U14), and Tami Goto (U16) of the PG Club, plus Raphael Encinas (U10) of North Capital and Mattias Schenk of the Hart.
