For the first time in years, school enrolment is inching upwards in School District 57.

A preliminary report being presented to the School Board tonight shows 12,728 children in the system, up from 12,654 last year.

The report also states that out of 40 schools in the District, 12 are experiencing overcrowding.

College Heights Secondary has 921 students this year despite being designed for 850 while Duchess Park Secondary is 80 students over its 900 person capacity. Things are improving at DP Todd; they are now just 41 students over capacity, a big improvement from 2011-12 when they were 156 over the designed maximum.

On the other side of the coin, several other schools are experiencing serious under-enrolment.

Nusdeh Yoh Elementary is at just 46% capacity while Nukko Lake Elementary sits at about 50%. Quinson Elementary is also sitting at a low 61%.

Also on tonight’s agenda, the SD57 Board will discuss planned upgrades to the Polaris Montessori School and rural education initiatives.

The meeting gets underway at 7pm at the Board Offices on Ferry Avenue.
