Hartley Miller’s Hart Attack – November 27, 2015 Edition 551

Canadian Traditions include (Canada Day) July 1st, Thanksgiving and the Grey Cup.

Sure there are other prominent customary festivities, but the three aforementioned traditions have a way of rallying all Canadians together regardless if they live in a province such as Prince Edward Island or a city such as Prince George.

The Grey Cup is a party, a gala, a special event, yes one big bash.

It’s for the young and old, healthy and ill, rich and poor, football and non-football fans.

Grey Cup is also about the Best of the West battling the Beasts Of The East.

Forget about counting calories, Sunday is a day to indulge, watch the biggest TV screen possible and together with family and/or friends, or quietly in one’s home put the feet up and relish the moment.

Throughout the years I admit that my interest in the CFL has faded.

I’m not sure there is one specific reason why I watch less Canadian Football games than 15 or 20 years ago, but the lure of NFL action contributes to the change.

If the average Canadian was asked to pick one, watching the Grey Cup or Super Bowl, I think we know what the answer would be.

This doesn’t mean the CFL isn’t a great game or doesn’t fill a need, but the NFL glitz has grabbed our attention.

Let’s be honest, how many people do you know participate in a CFL pool compared to one in the NFL?

Also, how many people can name more CFL than NFL players?

Naturally, fans in Ottawa and Edmonton will be entrenched in Sunday’s game with kickoff just after 3 p.m. (PST).

16 of the previous 17 Grey Cup games have been decided by 13 points or less; however, only seven of those had a final outcome decided by a converted touchdown or less.

The (15-4) Eskimos, riding a 9-game win streak, are favored by seven over the upstart second year (13-6) Redblacks.

A long drought will come to an end.

The Eskimos last participated in the Grey Cup in 2005, defeating the Montreal Alouettes 38-35 in overtime.

Ottawa has its first Grey Cup appearance since the former Rough Riders lost in the ’81 final to the Eskimos.

Edmonton fans can be optimistic if one puts value on the four regular-season games between the two teams in 2014 and 15, as the Eskimos won all four.

Let’s hope the 103rd Grey Cup classic in Winnipeg brings a special memory.

Who could ever forget the infamous 13th man game in 2009?

Montreal beat Saskatchewan in Calgary 28-27 on a last play 33-yard Damon Duval field goal.

Duval appeared to lose the game after missing his first attempt, but was given a second chance because Saskatchewan had 13 players on the field.

In 1962, there was the unforgettable Fog Bowl Grey Cup game played in Toronto.

It started December 1st, was halted due to fog in the 4th quarter and resumed December 2nd with Winnipeg holding on for a 28-27 victory over Hamilton.

These kinds of games are classic moments that will remain part of “Canadian” culture and heritage.

Oh, just for the record, I am picking the Eskimos to win by 13.

Brandon Deschamps is one determined player with a bit of a chip on his shoulder.

The Kelly Road grad was hoping to make the BC Lions this year but was among their final cuts.

The 23-year-old Deschamps was crushed by the news but decided to return for one final season with the UBC Thunderbirds.

The Prince George running back made a wise choice excelling this year in the CIS while peaking at the right time.

Deschamps was the Uteck Bowl MVP with 178 all-purpose yards in a convincing 36-9 victory over St. Francis Xavier University X-Men.

The fifth-year arts student was named the CIS offensive player of the week after scoring a touchdown, rushing for 128 yards on 20 carries and adding 50 more yards on three receptions.

Deschamps ground attack helped UBC advance to the Vanier Cup for the first time in 18 years.

They will battle defending champion Montreal Carabins Saturday (10 a.m. PST) in Quebec City.

Both teams are 9-2.

The 6-foot Deschamps still has aspirations of playing in the CFL, but his immediate goal is to leave University football with a national championship, something he plans to accomplish this weekend.

To help start the festivities honoring Brett Favre on Thursday, the Green Bay Packers presented him with a Key to the City. Which city, New York or Minneapolis?

After the Packers lost again, 17-13 to the Bears, it looks like Brett Favre’s number may be unretired today.

For Americans watching this weekend’s CFL Grey Cup game, the “C” in the middle of the field stands for “Center Ice”, which is what the field at Winnipeg will consist of at game time.
