WorkSafe BC warns of unstable snowpack

Due to the recent avalanches near McBride and Prince George, WorkSafe BC says unstable snow-pack is putting workers at risk.

Forest Industry Specialist, Carole Savage says workers in other sectors are just as susceptible to the conditions.

“There are other industries besides the ski hill and the adventure industries that could be at risk of avalanches.”

Savage also gave her advice on how to travel through a potential avalanche area.

“If workers are travelling through or around an avalanche hazard zone a qualified person needs to conduct a risk assessment to determine if there is a risk of avalanches.”

Since 1998, BC avalanches have caused 3 worker deaths and 47 accepted time loss injury claims.

Snow stability can change daily but also by the hour or minute and avalanches can occur anywhere there is steep enough terrain with sufficient snow depth along with the proper weather conditions.
