Prince George Citizen cutting Monday edition

The big changes taking place in Canada’s newspaper landscape have touched Prince George once again.

The Prince George Citizen announced Friday it would be moving to a 5 day, Tues – Sat publication schedule effective February 15th.

“The Monday edition of the Citizen has always been our smallest in terms of advertising revenue and for news,” Citizen publisher Colleen Sparrow said in a statement “We are refocusing our efforts to serve our advertisers and our readers Tuesday through Saturday.”

The Citizen is also changing the way it handles flyers, centralizing out of Vancouver. The flyers will now be trucked north to Prince George with a “new weekly Citizen publication for both subscribers and non-subscribers.”

As a result, most of the papers mailroom will be eliminated while changes also come to the press room and business office.

“I want to thank all of our departing staff, particularly our mailers and inserters, for their hard work and efforts over the years,” Sparrow said. “The Citizen has changed many times over its 100 years of business due to technology and automation. This is part of that necessary change to keep the Citizen as a sustainable business that serves the community.”
