Pats nip the Cats

The Regina Pats scored twice, eight seconds apart late in the second period, as they rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Prince George Cougars.

Regina tallied the last four goals of the game with the winner coming with 3:28 left in the 3rd period followed by an empty net goal.

Jesse Gabrielle, with his 34th goal, Chase Witala with his 33rd, and rookie Justin Almeida with his 2nd scored for the Cougars who finished their Prairie road trip 2-3-1.

The two teams combined for 136 penalty minutes.

Prince George has slipped eight points behind second place Victoria and 10 back of Kelowna in the B.C. Division.

The 31-21-2-1 Cougars host WHL leading Kelowna Friday and Saturday.

The Surrey Eagles scored late in the second and added the only goal of the third to edge the Prince George Spruce Kings 4-3 Saturday.

The two teams split the doubleheader as the Spruce Kings took Friday’s game 9-3 over the last place Eagles.

The Major Midget Cariboo Cougars dumped the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds 5-2 Saturday for their 14th win in their last 15 games.

The same two teams meet again today (Sunday) in Abbotsford.

The first place TRU Wolfpack beat the UNBC Timberwolves for the second straight day in Canada West men’s and women’s basketball.

TRU outscored the UNBC men 70-56 and the Lady Timberwolves 83-54 Saturday in Kamloops.

With four games left, UNBC is 3-13 in the men’s division and 2-14 in the women’s standings.

–The Prince George Judo Club earned nine medals (six gold, one silver and two bronze) at the Judo BC Youth Championships in Kamloops.
