Private schools top Fraser Institute elementary rankings in Prince George

The Fraser Institute has released its annual report card on BC elementary schools.

The top two schools in PG are both private; Immaculate Conception and St Mary’s. That reflects a trend across the province, as 80 of the provinces top 100 schools are private this year.

Lac de Bois was the highest ranked public school in the district, narrowly beating out Southridge.

A handful of public schools, such as Harwin, Quinson and Nusdeh Yoh are ranked near the bottom of the province. The full rankings can be read below.

However, School Board 57 Vice Chair Tim Bennett says ranking schools using a standardized test is misguided.

“While we don’t put a lot of weight behind the Fraser Institute report because of the work we know is happening in the schools, it is so disheartening to see that work being discredited.”

In a statement, BC School Trustee Association President Teresa Rezansoff also blasted the report as unfair.

“Rankings of elementary schools amounts to a ranking of children based on their parents’ income, their special needs, or the broad range of educational programs they pursue. This inherently flawed evaluation and ranking of school performance does a disservice to many great schools in B.C. that strive to serve the needs of all children.”

The BC Teachers Federation responded to the report via twitter;
