Questions raised about Mount Polley

Untreated waste water flowing directly from Mt Polley into Quesnel Lake is not sitting well with Mining Watch Canada.

The B.C Ministry of Environment recently gave Mount Polley permission to temporarily bypass their 2 million dollar water treatment plant.

In an e-mail, it says the are required to deal with freshet flows and a bottleneck at the treatment plant.

Spokesperson, Ugo Lapointe says they find it appalling…

“It was pretty clear months ago when they applied for their permit that single water treatment plant would not be enough. So the big question is why Mt. Polley Mine Corporation did not buy two units to treat all of its water.”

Lapointe says the authorization of the bypass is troubling for the future and that it’s another sign of poor management and planning.

The Ministry of Environment claims that the water bypassing the treatment plant meets quality limits and will not harm the environment.

Imperial Metals was unavailable for comment.
