Roadway line painting gets underway in Prince George

You’ll be able to see the lines on the road again very soon.

Crews contracted by the City of Prince George have begun line marking operations, focusing on high traffic volume areas first. Yellowhead Pavement Markings has begun painting in the Hart as well as on streets downtown.

It’s a multi-step process. Surveying must be done and preliminary markings laid out before full lines can be painted. All winter traction material needs to be removed before painting can begin.

Painting operations are also weather dependent. It must be light enough at 5:00 am for crews to work safely on busy intersections that can’t be painted during the day and temperatures must be high enough for the paint to bond with the asphalt.

This year’s line painting operations will cover 459 kilometres. Some markings must be done by hand including 595 pedestrian crossings, 463 stop bars and 609 directional arrows.

The city anticipates that all painting operations will be completed by mid-June, except for recently rehabilitated road that will need their paint updated over the summer.
