YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day takes place Sunday at Canada Games Plaza

If you’re looking to get out and enjoy the sunshine with the kids this Sunday, you might want to check out the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day event.

“Healthy Kids Day is a YMCA Canada national event so it takes place in over 1,000 communities across the nation,” says Stephanie Mikalishen, coordinator of philanthropic development and camp programs at the YMCA of Northern BC. “This is the 9th year we’ve been hosting the event here in Prince George and we have some really exciting changes this year. The first one is we’re relocating so we’re going to be at the Canada Games Plaza. The second big change is it’s a lot earlier this year and we’re moving it to an all day event. We’re running all day this Sunday from 10AM until 4PM.”

Mikalishen says the event has something for every family.

“The event is completely free and it’s for all ages. There’s activities for tots all the way to 12 year olds. There’s going to be face-painting and arts and crafts, Healthy Kids karaoke and inflatables.”

There will also be information booths and performances on the main stage. If you’ve got a Marvel fan in the house, you’ll want to be on site for noon when Iron man will be making an appearance.

“We have a number of community partners who will be attending, including Northern Bear Aware and the Canadian Diabetes Association. Another big highlight is that the Two Rivers Art Gallery is bringing their Family Fun Art Days outside and offering it free to the community as part of the event.”

And there will be local food vendors as well.

“The White Goose Bistro and frozen paddle are going to be on site,” says Mikalishen. “So you can plan to come down and spend the day and have lunch and do lots of activities and just really have a great day together to celebrate as a family and as a community.”

Kids and parents will even have the chance to make some furry friends.

“Another exciting piece to the event is that Black Spruce Farms is bringing their travelling petting zoo,” Mikalishen says.

It’s all free and it’s all in celebration of healthy, active families.
