P.G. fire chief comments on Fort McMurray disaster

Prince George’s Fire Chief has shared his thoughts on Tuesday’s raging wildfire in Fort McMurray.

John Iverson says at this point, they have not been asked to help out.

“We have not received a request for resources and I don’t believe that we will there are quite a few firefighters and equipment in Alberta that’s a lot closer than we are which is where I expect there help to come from.”

Iverson adds it’s a devastating situation to deal with and compares this to the Kelowna and Salmon Arm wildfires a few years ago.

The BC Wildfire Service has said it can’t help Alberta with the forest fire due to the province’s own forest fire situation.

Ryan Turcot states given the current activity in the province, we need to maintain our resources and are unable to lend crews at this time.

The last time Alberta faced a fire-related evacuation was back in 2011 when 9,000 people were forced from their homes in Slave Lake.

Over 1600 structures in Fort McMurray have been destroyed.
