Harkins confirms Matvichuk is on Cougars short-list

The search for the Prince George Cougars next head coach seems to be heating up.

One of the names being considered is ex-NHL defenceman Richard Matvichuk.

General Manager, Todd Harkins met with Matvichuk in Kansas City this past week and says he’s very much on the radar but is still far from a done deal.

“I do like Richard he’s a very qualified individual and has a great pedigree in both playing and coaching but there is nothing to report at this time.”

Harkins adds while the search is in its final stages, the list seems to be getting longer.

“I would like to have it done by the NHL Draft (June 24th) but the longer I wait, the more e-mails and phone calls I seem to get from other potential coaches who have come out of the woodwork. Every day I seem to get two to three more resumes.”

Matvichuk is currently the Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations with the ECHL’s Missouri Mavericks.

They compiled a regular season record of 52-15-5.
