WorkSafe BC urging home owners to check contractors insurance

BC’s renovation season is in full swing and WorkSafe BC is reminding property owners to carefully check their contractors to avoid extra costs.

This can be done by requesting a clearance letter on WorkSafe BC’s website.

Director of Assessments, Deepak Kothary says property owners will have to follow the same process if they spearhead the project themselves.

“Some homeowners choose to be their own general contractor where they will hire the dry-waller, electrician and if they become that they will most likely have to register with us.”

Homeowners can be held liable for insurance premiums in the province if the contractor they hire isn’t registered for workplace insurance or is not up to date with their payments.

Property owners can also request a clearance letter by going on-line or by calling 1-888-922-2768 or 1-604-244-6380.
