‘Little Free Library’ movement in Prince George

A cupboard of books now hangs on a fence along 10th Ave between McBride and Laurier Crescents.

Spruceland Traditional Elementary Teacher/Librarian Jessica Bonin has opened Prince George’s first ‘Free Little Library’ – where the community can take and return books on an honour system.

She says she found the idea on Pinterest, and in talking to friends found that they have popped up everywhere from Quesnel and Smithers to Vancouver and Victoria.

The whole neighbourhood has pitched in, contributing towards an eclectic mix of reading for young and old.

“I know my neighbour bought a bunch down. We were lacking in children’s books and then all of a sudden it’s fully packed with children’s books at the bottom. Because it goes right down to Duchess Park here on 10th Avenue, we wanted to make sure there was lots of kids books as well.”

While some of the rural communities that surround PG have a similar community library, Bonin says this is the first one registered through the ‘Little Free Library’ database – a network of more than 40,000 around the globe.

“I hope that more people get these going, it’s a great thing to get communities together. I created a Facebook page; ‘Little Free Libraries of Prince George’ hoping that people join it and jump on board the Little Free Library movement.”
