Wildfire danger rising in PG due to higher temperatures

Despite a rise in temperatures, Category 2 and 3 fires are still allowed in the Prince George Fire Centre.

Ryan Turcot with the BC Wildfire Service says anyone bringing recreational vehicles during the BC Day long weekend should to be vigilant.

“People who are going to be operating any type of motorized vehicle like an ATV or dirt bike need to understand the exhaust from those systems is enough to generate heat for a wildfire.”

Turcot adds the BC Day long-weekend can both be a hindrance and a help.

“It’s a double-edged sword because there are going to be more people out in the backcountry potentially starting human-caused wildfires but there will also be more eyes if they see any of those situations.”

From April 1st to as of noon on Thursday, the BC Wildfire Service has responded to 603 wildfires with 201 of those caused by humans.

If you plan an open burn, make sure a shovel or 8 litres of water is on hand to extinguish the blaze.

Once the fire is out the ashes have to be cool to the touch before you leave the area.

To report a wildfire or an unattended campfire call 1-888-663-5555 or cal *5555 on your cell.
