Province announces funding for CNC heavy duty mechanics

The College of New Caledonia has received $1.2M in funding from the province for equipment in its heavy duty mechanic program.

Local MLA Mike Morris says the state of the art equipment will keep the program at industry standard, “it includes a hydro-static transmission trainer for the heavy duty program, and a turbine and generator set for the power engineering program.”

Other equipment will also benefit the metal fabrications, industrial mechanic and electrical programs.

The heavy duty mechanic program is one of CNC’s most popular and currently has a two year long waiting list. The College has submitted a $14M proposal to expand the program, which suffers from a lack of physical training space at the Nicholson Street building.

Labour Minister Shirley Bond says the province is considering the expansion, “the government has a ten year capital plan which is reviewed regularly by ministers and treasury board. I can assure you that Mike and I have made it known that this is a priority for us – that work continues and those evaluations are underway.”
