“Sober October” raising awareness of alcohol-cancer link

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) wants you to know the cancer-associated risks of drinking.

That’s the idea behind the “Sober October” campaign this month, challenging everyone to put down the drink until after Halloween. You can register online, and all pledges will fund cancer programs and research.

CCS spokesperson Sandra Blackwell says it’s simple. The less alcohol you drink, the less likely you are to develop certain cancers like “breasts, colon, rectum, esophagus, mouth, (and) liver,” she says. “If we do choose to drink: for women, keep it less than one drink per day and keep it less than two drinks a day for men.”

A recent CCS study shows that a drink a day increases women’s chance of getting breast cancer by 15%. Two or three daily drinks boosts a man’s chances of colon cancer by 24%.

If you want to sign up but don’t think you can go a month without a drink, Blackwell says you can buy a “hall pass” for twenty bucks.
