UPDATE: Code yellow lifted for local high schools

UPDATE 10:20a: The Prince George RCMP are recommending that SD57 lift all the code yellows at local high schools and allow regular school activity resume.

RCMP investigators found that further reports of threats are “non-credible and in some cases, out dated”. Despite that, police will continue to investigate and have an increased presence around schools.

In a statement, RCMP Cpl Craig Douglass said “investigations tie up resources that could be better used responding to where they are truly needed.”

“Anyone believed to be involved in these threats will be the subject of a police response and treated seriously until determined otherwise.”

The Prince George School District says they have been advised by the RCMP to hold and secure all secondary schools in Prince George. Officials say they received the information leading to this decision as most staff and students were arriving at school.

In response, SD57 high schools moved to a ‘code red’, which was determined to be the most effective way to quickly ensure safety of students and staff.

At about 9:10a, impacted schools then shifted to a code yellow.

Code yellow requires students to be in classrooms with closed doors. Outside doors are locked. Staff monitor exits with only supervised entrance and exit of students and parents as is necessary.

The School District says they are in direct communication with RCMP, and that safety of students and staff remains their first priority.

An RCMP officer stationed in front of PGSS indicated the security measures were completely precautionary.

This is the second day in a row for heightened security in SD57, on Thursday schools were placed under a lockdown for most of the day due to a threatening instagram post. (previous story)
