HARTLEY MILLER’S HART ATTACK – (Variety at its finest) October 14, 2016 EDITION 597

Does it get much better than this time of the year for the sports fan?

The NHL season has started and with Auston Matthews setting a league record with an eye-popping four goals in his first game there’s a reason to watch right off the bat.

Is it possible for one teenager to give credibility to a Toronto Maple Leafs franchise that has been in shambles for years? I doubt it, but there is intrigue to see Matthews and another teen, Connor McDavid, have a friendly rivalry to see who can produce more offensively and garner the most attention.

Okay, because he is in the “centre” of the Universe, Matthews should easily grab more headlines, but I expect McDavid to have more success.

After one game, Matthews leads with four points compared to three but McDavid scored the winning goal helping his team to victory.

Speaking about Toronto, Major League Baseball is down to its final four and interest has been peaked with the Blue Jays eight wins shy of winning the World Series.

While most Canadians cheer wildly for them, there’s still a strong more silent group that doesn’t want Toronto to succeed.

Having passion either for or against a team brings about the most drama.

I am expecting the Jays to win the ALCS over the Indians and the Cubs to take the NLCS over the Dodgers.

Either way, a long World Series drought will end. BlueJays – 1993, Dodgers – 1988, Indians – 1948, Cubs – 1908.

The NFL season is just past the ¼ mark and who would have guessed that one of the top stories would be the Dallas Cowboys quarterback controversy.

In a small sample, Dak Prescott has already surpassed Tony Romo in many minds, but should Romo lose his job due to injury? If the Cowboys keep winning and or playing well offensively, why make the change? The answer may be as soon as the end of the month.

NFL television ratings are actually down and that in itself is news. Having the 5-0 Minnesota Vikings as the best early season team doesn’t help with their limited national appeal.

Once the farcical U.S. Presidential debates are complete the NFL numbers should go back to normal.

The New England Patriots, us against them mentality, now that Brady is back, is riveting.

Having the Cowboys and Patriots both as contenders brings out both emotion and devotion.

The CFL is down to crunch time. Are the Calgary Stampeders really as good as their 13-1-1 record indicates?

Yes, they can match the league record of 16 regular season wins set by the 1989 Edmonton Eskimos (although the Eskimos lost twice that year not including the Western Final).

With first place already clinched, we will find out if the Stamps have the motivation to try and make history.

The NBA regular season tips off in less than two weeks. With a new villain in Golden State, is the league ready for intense scrutiny of another super team?

In Prince George, the Cougars 8-2 start has received national attention. Are the Cougars as good as their first eight games might suggest or based on their last two games did they peak too early?

Sure, it’s mid-October and the weather has already turned, but the smorgasbord on the table offers the best variety for the sports connoisseur.
