UPDATE: Prince George Fire Rescue says the HazMat team has determined the package, facility and all employees to be safe. No injuries were reported.

The Canada Post Office on Penn Road has been evacuated after receiving a suspicious package.

“It took place right around noon today,” says local president Tami Brushey. “There was a parcel put on our belt system that had white powder on it and when that happens, there’s a protocol put in place and that’s what’s happening right now.”

She says a total of 10 employees have been evacuated from the building while another three, who come into contact with the package, have been quarantined inside.

The RCMP and fire crews are on scene and hazardous materials crews have entered the building.

While the situation is alarming, Brushey says there have been several similar incidents in the past 15 years.

“It’s always a concern but we’ve been through this before, most of us, and it’s a protocol put in place for our own safety and we’re all aware of that.”

She says, in the past, investigators have first attempted to contact the sender of a suspicious package but that may prove difficult in this latest incident.

“This time they’re not quite sure which parcel it was. There’s white powder on one parcel but they’re thinking it may have come out of another parcel.”

The situation is still developing. We will have more information as it becomes available.
