HARTLEY MILLER’S HART ATTACK – (best ever?) October 21, 2016 EDITION 598

It’s time to play True or False. This game is so fun and easy, rules and/or directions are not necessary.

The 5-8-0-1 Prince George Spruce Kings are better than their record indicates.

True.

All teams with a losing record will make a claim they should be higher in the standings but the Spruce Kings have a legitimate case.

Prince George is an impressive 5-1-0-1 in games not including the top two teams in the BCHL, Penticton and Wenatchee.

Yes, they are 0-7 against the combination of the Vees and Wild, however, they have been winning with regularity against everyone else.

Last night (Thursday), the Spruce Kings beat the league’s third best team the Chilliwack Chiefs 4-1.

The only P.G. loss, other than to Penticton and Wenatchee, was 1-0 to the Powell River Kings, even though they outshot Powell River by a whopping 51-21 margin.

I am not suggesting the Spruce Kings have all of a sudden become an elite model franchise but their results show they are clearly much improved from last season where they finished 16th out of 17.

The Cleveland Browns will finish 0-16.

False.

The Browns are 0-6 and have gone through at least five quarterbacks.

Looking at their schedule, Cleveland could be an underdog in each of its last 10 games, so there’s a possibility they will lose those 10 to match the 2008 Detroit Lions. (Note: the Lions won their pre-season games that year while the Browns lost all four exhibition games this year).

For the sake of argument let’s agree that Cleveland will drop its four remaining road games: at Cincinnati, at Baltimore, at Buffalo and at Pittsburgh, but they are bound to win at least one of six at home.

The Browns host the New York Jets, Dallas, Pittsburgh, New York Giants, Cincinnati and San Diego.

Just last Sunday the Miami Dolphins at home stunned the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers.

These upsets happen although there may not be a logical explanation for it.

I will even go out on a limb and suggest the Browns will finish 2-14 which will still be good enough to secure the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The CFL needs to change its playoff format.

True.

The top four teams in the West Division all have better records than each team in the East.

The 6-9 Hamilton Tiger-Cats, or another East team with a losing record, will have a home playoff date. You’ve got to be kidding, right?

There’s a belief teams are better off finishing 4th than 3rd in the West to get a better post-season schedule (based on record).

This type of perception hurts the league’s credibility.

The time has come for the CFL to go with one nine team division with the top six advancing to the playoffs.

Perhaps that is just too simple and realistic.

Less than two Canadian teams will make the 2016-17 NHL Playoffs.

False.

What happened last year was an anomaly with none of the seven from the Great White North qualifying for the post-season, however, five of the seven made it the year before.

Sure, it is a stretch to believe the Toronto Maple Leafs will be a playoff team, but three of the other six are more than capable.

The Habs, Senators and Oilers provide the best hope, and with the Canucks having started 4-0 for just the second time ever they could be the sleeper.

The Toronto Blue Jays have peaked.

True.

The Jays should be saluted for reaching the ALCS in back to back years but expect them to fall back rather than qualify for the World Series in 2017 or 2018.

Toronto will able to rely on a solid young pitching staff to remain competitive but sluggers Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion head the list of 12 players that are up for free agency this off-season.

Even if the Jays are fortunate to have a similar roster next year, chances heavily weigh that they won’t be able to duplicate their success of the past two seasons.

This week’s Hart Attack column was the best ever.

False.

But are you in agreement it was a close second?

I’m not saying Andrew Toles’s throw home from left field in Wednesday’s NLCS was off-line, but I am surprised the “Error 404” message didn’t pop up.

The Los Angeles Dodgers apparently stayed at the Trump hotel in Chicago for their regular season series against the Cubs in May. But Adrian Gonzalez, who is of Mexican descent, refused, saying “I had my reasons.” Darn, another Dodger I can’t root against.
