Residents want road repairs and improvements in Blackburn

Blackburn residents had many concerns about their roads to bring forward to City staff at last night’s Talktober event.

Improvements were suggested for several areas but one name kept coming up over and over again

“Midland Road,” says Dave Dyer, Roads Manager for the city. “It’s a gravel road so we do have some upgrading to do on that, obviously from what we heard tonight. It’s good to hear from folks and be able to get some attention on it. We heard a lot about lighting and a need for improvements on that. So we’re going to talk and see if there’s an opportunity on hydro poles, like we’ve been doing on Tyner Boulevard.”

Narrow shoulders, better pedestrian protection, sidewalks and drainage issues also came up.

Dyer says improvements in Blackburn can be tricky and costlier than some other areas of the city because there are several far flung gravel roads and less infrastructure in the area in general.

He says he welcomes feedback and suggestions from residents at any time but Talktober events provide a flood of input.

“All this is very good information. I always tell folks, I don’t drive every road in the city. Let us know. This is an opportunity for that but you can also call us.”

He says it can be difficult for city staff to be aware of all areas needing attention and it is helpful when people are willing to take the time to make a call or send an email when they see something that concerns them.

The next Talktober event is Monday, October 24 for downtown.
