Amnesty International launched a report today defending Northeastern BC’s indigenous women in areas with resource development.
The Out of Sight, Out of Mind report shows well-paid resources workers heading to the area have driven up the price of necessities like groceries and housing. These often become higher than what many First Nations can afford.
The report also suggests young men (the vast majority of workers) abuse alcohol and drugs to “blow off steam,” which can lead to violent crimes.
Amnesty International’s Women’s Rights Campaigner and report co-author Jacqueline Hansen says the impacts on women needs to be considered.
“Resource development should not ever come at the expense of the safety and the well being of indigenous women and girls.”
The report has about 30 recommendations for governments, RCMP, and the industry. Among them include an increased RCMP presence and suspending related to Site C construction.
