Prince George RCMP administer nasal Naloxone to overdosing man

The Prince George RCMP  applied a nasal dose of naloxone to an man who appeared to have overdosed on heroine early Friday morning.

Police attended the scene just after 5 o’clock when they found an unresponsive male at a Chief Lake Road residence.

The man was located by an officer in a shed on the property. The officer recognized the symptoms of the opiate overdose and administered the drug.

“It’s first one where we’ve used the nasal format,” says RCMP Superintendent Warren Brown. “The police officer who had attended before the ambulance was there felt that the person was actually deceased. They used the naloxone and the subject seemingly came back to life. It’s our job to serve and protect. Unfortunately, many times that involves vulnerable people.”

Brown says the 28-year old man was  later transported to hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery.

“The unfortunate reality is that fentanyl and derivatives are now common place in our community and our members face the risk of contamination everyday. Our ability to possess and administer naloxone, gives our members an added level of security for not only their safety, but also the safety of the community we serve.”
