Finishing touches of film to be shot in Barkerville

Barkerville will be the set of a movie sometime in the next few weeks.

James Douglas, Manager of Visitor Experiences and part-time movie producer, says the scenes in Barkerville will finish off The Doctor’s Case, a Sherlock Holmes story written by Steven King.

“Once that’s completed, we already have an editing team that is working on the film itself, putting together a teaser trailer that we’ll be able to put on-line hopefully in the next week or so, and then its just a process of turning this whole collection of raw footage and other things into a film that we will want people to see.”

Douglas says they are aiming for a September 15 completion date as he plans on entering it into the Sundance Film Festival.

He says they will need some extras for the scenes in Barkerville.

Douglas says they hope to have a free showing of the film in Barkerville, as well as Quesnel and Prince George sometime in October.

The film is part of the Dollar Babies program that Stephen King’s publishing company has run since the 70’s.

One of the highlights for Douglas is that King himself will view the film and provide him with some feedback.

We asked Douglas if there were any surprises that stood out in this process.

“Everything has to be scheduled so precisely in order to make things work. For example when we were in Victoria we needed to arrange with Victoria Carriage Tours for the loan of a horse that could then pull a period appropriate carriage that we had brought down with us, but you’ve got to make that timing right ? And when you are paying by the hour for that kind of rental and rightfully so because they are giving us a deal, but anything that happens with permits as far as the city is concerned or if there is an unexpected truck in the middle of Bastion Square on the day that you have a permit to shoot the exterior scenes and it’s the only place that you can actually catch a building that looks like it may be the exterior of 221 Baker Street and you have to do it that day.”

Douglas says there will be another fundraising opportunity for people that missed the chance prior to shooting.

He says there are still some costs with post production, not only the editing and colouring but our music production and sound effects as well, so there will be an Indiegogo campaign which starts within the next couple of weeks that will allow people to help and get their name in the credits.
