Prince George Hospice Society launches ‘Bucket List Initiative’

Do you have a ‘bucket list’? What is it that you hope to accomplish or experience during your life?

The Prince George Hospice Society is hoping to make resident’s dreams come true, by encouraging people to submit their ideas to The Bucket List Initiative.

“We’ve always put a bucket list on our Dream Home wall, and people put what their bucket lists were,” says Donna Flood, executive director of the Hospice Society.

“Then we thought, ‘How do we tie that into this?,’ and then it just started growing into something that we found both works for people that want to fill wishes as those that want to get wishes.”

The initiative has two parts. The first one is already underway with Bucket List PG, a Facebook group where members can post pictures of videos of themselves fulfilling a bucket list goal, using the hashtag #BucketListPG. Prizes will be offered to posters every week.

On September 22, the Bucket List Fundraiser Gala will take place at the Prince George Civic Centre.

It will be a formal dinner celebrating achieving goals and living life with purpose. Ben Nemtin, of MTV’s The Buried Life, will be speaking. Tickets are available online. Each ticket will allow the purchaser to enter a draw to have their bucket list goal come true.

There are three types of bucket list items as far as the initiative is concerned. “C” Level bucket list goals require only a little push to be reached. Things like getting in shape or learning how to better use your fancy D-SLR camera. “B” Level items are difficult but not out of reach – skydiving, bungee jumping or whitewater rafting, for example. And at the top? “A” level items – ‘the Loftiest of Dreams’ – might include meeting a favourite celebrity, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro or singing live to a sold out crowd.

Gala attendees will write one goal from each category on their ticket. Flood says there will be some restrictions on what participants can request.

“We can’t have someone walk on the moon, but more perhaps in the realm of things that are possible. Hospice is about living your best life and we see everyday sometimes the remorse of people that maybe didn’t, but we’re really excited to hear what the community has to say about their bucket lists.”

Starting on June 30, the Hospice Society will begin drawing tickets and fulfilling B and C level goals. At the Gala, the Society will fulfill at least one A level goal for a lucky winner.
