UPDATE: 75-hectare wildfire near Houston contained

UPDATE – JUNE 25TH, 10AM:

Heavy smoke may be noticeable in and out of Houston if you’re travelling this weekend.

BC Wildfire Service says the 75-hectare blaze is now being classified as “being held.”

According to the responders’ website, this means the fire is not expected to spread beyond the boundaries.

Big equipment and air support have helped with the enclosure as well as forecasted conditions for the area.

The fire is suspected to be human-caused, but investigations are still in its early stages.

UPDATE – JUNE 25TH, 5:30AM:

The BC Wildfire Service is still battling a now 75-hectare blaze which began early Friday night 40 kilometres south of the city, not too far from Owen Lake.

As of 9PM Saturday night, 40 firefighters are now on-scene monitoring the incident, which is allegedly human-caused.

Investigations continue as heavy equipment and air support have been assisting first responders.

UPDATE – JUNE 24TH, 10AM:

The BC Wildfire Service says the blaze south of Houston has increased to 70 hectares.

There are now 43 firefighters at the site, with 40 more en route as well as heavy equipment and air support.

ORIGINAL STORY:

BC’s Wildfire Service is reporting a blaze 40 kilometres south of Houston.

The government agency says a wildfire began near Owen Lake before 8PM Friday night allegedly human caused.

According to the website, it has burned an estimated 18 hectares of land and remains active.
