Canucks reel in veterans Gagner, Del Zotto in NHL Free Agency

The Vancouver Canucks were among the busiest teams wheeling and dealing in the NHL’s Free Agent Frenzy on Canada Day Saturday.

General Manager Jim Benning was able to nab notable names throughout the day, including former Edmonton Oiler Sam Gagner.

The 27-year-old has signed a three-year, $9.45 million contract with Vancouver, earning an annual value of $3.15 million.

Benning says the London, Ontario native is one of the hardest-working players he’s ever seen.

“Sam has good speed and skill. He brings tremendous experience to our team and will set a good example for our younger players.”

Gagner recorded a career-high 50 points (18G, 32A) in 81 games with the Columbus Blue Jackets last season, while under former Vancouver bench boss John Tortorella.

The Canucks also picked up Defenceman Michael Del Zotto from Philadelphia in Free Agency, locking down a two-year, one-way contract worth $6 million.

The Stouffville, Ontario product finished second among Flyers blue-liners in goals with six, and has put up 189 points (47G, 142A) in 484 career NHL games.

Bennings says Del Zotto has the playmaking ability the blue and green have been looking for.

“He’s mobile; adds depth and scoring to our blue line. His ability to log big minutes and contribute in all situations will help our team be competitive every night.”

Del Zotto has suited up for Nashville and the New York Rangers over his nine-year big league stint.
