Cullen calling for all party talks on electoral reform

NDP MP and Electoral Reform Critic Nathan Cullen is calling on the Trudeau Liberals to open the door to all party talks on the matter.

Cullen wants any House of Commons committee to have its seats distributed along the last election results.

“Here’s the nightmare scenario for the Liberals; if they are the only ones voting on a new voting system Canadians will be rightly suspicious that new system favours Liberals. It only makes logical sense.”

Cullen tabled his plan in a letter to Minister for Democratic Institutions, Maryam Monsef today in Ottawa.

“I’ve since had conversations with government members and they have not immediately shot it down.” Cullen said with a laugh “In politics, that’s a good start.”

A typical house of commons committee would exclude both the Green Party and Bloc Quebecois because neither have official party status.

“More than a half a million Canadians supported both of those parties. This is an unprecedented thing we are doing, it’s historic so let’s do it in a way that’s much more inclusive and fair.”
