Traditional pride celebrations have been put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This pride month, the Prince George Pride Society is holding several events from a distance, instead of the regular parade.
“We are asking people across PG to put a rainbow in their window to show support for pride, so that LGBTQ people, as they are driving around the city see these flags and know that our community is welcoming and understanding of diversity and wants to celebrate every person,” said Susan Trabant, President of Prince George Pride.
The pride flag will also be raised at City Hall, but it will be live-streamed on social media.
Gammon also addressed ongoing Black Lives Matter demonstrations in the United States and Canada.
“Right now we are stuck in this place where racism is well and alive, and not only is it well and alive, it’s being videotaped and sent across the globe,” she said.
“I think that if we can get to a place where we are actually acknowledging difference and looking at difference as something to celebrate, that would solve a lot of problems.”
Trabant adds that Prince George has ‘come a long way’ when it comes to diversity and inclusion, however, there is always room for improvement.
“The more that we can do to celebrate and make sure that everybody knows that hey, the difference is ok, we want to celebrate it.”
