Spruce Kings fans cherish nationals appearance

For the second time in 12 years, fans of the Prince George Spruce Kings saw their team play well into May.

The Fred Page and Doyle Cup champs ended a historic season with a second place finish at the National Junior A Championship where they fell in Sunday’s final 4-3 to the host Brooks Bandits.

Ed Ridley has been a longtime supporter of the Junior A club who says the experience in southern Alberta was top notch.

“The Brooks people have been great, a lot of heckling but lots of fun. The arena was great and it was all just fabulous.”

Over 125 supporters came out to the Centennial Regional Arena in Brooks to watch the Spruce Kings play their last two games at nationals.

Ray Rutherford was one of a select few who attended the tournament from start to finish and explained what it meant to him.

“My wife and I have had hockey tickets in the same spot at section 10 for over 20 years and we bought our tickets for the RBC this time in December because we figured they were going to be here based on the type of team they had last year.”

So how did this compare to the 2007 RBC Cup PG hosted at the CN Centre where they fell 3-1 in the final to the Aurora Tigers?

“We had an opportunity to see how the rest of Canada played hockey at that time and we came out of that with second place and that was a great experience too,” added Rutherford.

An event is being held today (Tuesday) at 4pm from the PG Conference and Civic Centre.
