Inquest into death of 51-year-old man to take place in Prince George

The BC Coroners Service is looking into a death from 2014.

On September 17, 2014, John Robert Buehler’s death was reported to the BC Coroners Service after a police-involved incident at a remote cabin south of Valemount. Buehler was 51 at the time of his death.

Under the Coroners Act, inquests are mandatory for any deaths that occur while the person was detained by or in the custody of a peace officer.

“Presiding coroner Donita Kuzma and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath,” BC Coroners Service’s Andy Watson told MyPGNow. “The role of that jury and the presiding coroner is to hear that evidence to determine the facts surrounding the death.”

The jury is not intended to make any finding of legal responsibility or express any conclusion of law as the BC Coroners Service is not a fault-finding agency.

The inquest will begin on July 15, 2019, which will get underway at 9:30 a.m. at the Prince George Courthouse.
