Deadline for those opposed to $32 million loan fast approaching

One week remains.

If you’re not on board with the City of Prince George’s proposed $32.2 million dollar loan, which was presented by City Council in February, time is quickly running out with the deadline of May 30 fast approaching.

The loan is open to public opinion through the Alternative Approval Process (AAP), which requires that 11 pages of a 25-page document, called Electoral Response Forms (ERF), be filled out and returned by 10% of the registered voters in the city, which is currently 55, 455.

The City’s plan for the loan includes 11 projects, each with their own Bylaw. As a result, citizens looking to defeat this initiative will be required to submit 11 ERF’s to counter them.

Phil Beaulieu, the founder of a Facebook group called Enough Already! City of PG AAP., which has been vocally against the loan since it was put on the table, said his group is offering to print, distribute, and return forms for ease of access to anyone who needs it.

“It’s unprecedented for the city,” Beaulieu told MyPGNow. “From our perspective, this is unsustainable. It’s perpetual borrowing for these types of projects.”

Beaulieu, along with his group, will be at the Farmer’s Market on Saturday to hand out forms for those who might share similar feelings towards to proposed loan. They will also be set up in the parking lot of City Hall on both Tuesday and Wednesday collecting signed forms.

“They’ve designed the process that if you don’t do anything they count your silence as being in favour,” said Beaulieu. “That borrowing will then happen automatically.”
