Northern communities get a high-speed update

The people of Mackenzie and Salmon Valley are getting a better connection to the world wide web.

The communities are two of 12 that are getting the wireless network upgrade funded by the Connecting British Columbia program.

“Reliable and affordable high-speed internet unlocks new business opportunities while also helping people stay connected with friends and loved ones,” said Jinny Sims, Minister of Citizens’ Services

ABC Communications Ltd. will install the upgrade with a $298,406 in funds from the provinces to offset the estimated $596,812 price tag.

The funding is part of $50-million given to the Connecting British Columbia program in the 2019 Budget.

The funds provide to the program are expected to benefit approximately 200 rural communities throughout the province.

“High-speed internet is like the new railroad of the 21st century it’s a foundational piece when you are looking at economic development to attract new industry and support the current industry,” said Sims.
